4 Foods to Feed Your Ears

We all have common sense when it comes to hearing protection. Don’t sit next to the speakers at a wedding, for example. We’ve even taken steps to maintain a healthy relationship with our ears, but wearing earplugs, walking away from the sound source, and turning down the volume are only a few of the ways to protect your hearing.

Today, we’re sharing another great way to protect your hearing: food! We all know chips and salsa go together, but what about bananas and hearing protection? If it sounds like a strange pairing, stick with us, because the food you eat now can have a direct effect on the hearing you’ll have later.

Magnesium found in bananas can protect against hearing loss. If you’re interested in the science, magnesium helps expand blood vessels and can improve circulation, even in your inner ear. This nutrient also helps control the release of glutamate, one of the major contributors to noise-induced hearing loss. This popular breakfast food is easy to incorporate into your diet, too. Just toss banana slices in a smoothie, slather with peanut butter, or even enjoy plain.

Salmon

An Australian study notes that increased intake of omega-3 fatty acids, found in fish like salmon and sardines, may reduce the risk of age-related hearing loss. Even if you’re young, there’s no time like the present to start taking care of your ears! Two servings of fish per week will help you keep the music, even as you age.

Broccoli

Broccoli is filled with all kinds of amazing nutrients like vitamin K, vitamin C, and fiber. These nutrients can help stop free radicals from damaging the delicate and sensitive tissue in your ears. Steamed, grilled, or raw, be sure to add this hearty vegetable to your diet!

Dark Chocolate

Dark chocolate is high in zinc, a nutrient that can help ward off age-related hearing loss, so the earlier you start savoring a daily chocolate square, the better!
